SKIN INFECTIONS

Skin infection is a condition where harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, invade the skin and multiply causing a variety of symptoms. These microorganisms can affect any part of the skin and range from mild to severe, potentially spreading to other parts of the body if left untreated.

What are the Various Types of Skin Infections?

Various types of skin infections range from mild to severe and have different forms of treatment to treat them. Some infections can be cured but some can be reduced by controlling the symptoms and causes.
Bacterial Infections
  1. Impetigo: A highly contagious infection common in children, characterized by red sores that burst and form a honey-colored crust.
  2. Cellulitis: A deeper infection of the skin and underlying tissues, causing redness, swelling, warmth, and pain.
  3. Boils (Furuncles): Pus-filled bumps caused by infected hair follicles, often due to Staphylococcus bacteria.
Viral Infections
  1. Herpes Simplex: Causes cold sores (HSV-1) or genital herpes (HSV-2), characterized by painful blisters.
  2. Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), leading to rough, raised bumps on the skin.
  3. Molluscum Contagiosum: A viral infection causing small, firm, painless bumps on the skin.
Fungal Infections
  1. Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis): A fungal infection affecting the feet, causing itching, burning, and cracked skin.
  2. Ringworm (Tinea Corporis): A contagious fungal infection forming ring-shaped, red, scaly patches on the skin.
  3. Yeast Infections (Candidiasis): Caused by Candida fungi, leading to red, itchy rashes, often in moist areas like the armpits or groin.
Parasitic Infections
  1. Scabies: Caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, causing intense itching and a pimple-like rash.
  2. Lice: Small insects that infest the scalp (head lice), body (body lice), or pubic area (pubic lice), causing itching and sores.
